Shehu Shagari is the first major university – NUC

The National Universities Commission (NUC) on Monday declared Shehu Shagari University of Education (SSUE) as the first major university of its kind in the northern part of the country.

Still known as the Shehu Shagari College of Education (SSCOE), Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has elevated it to the status of a full-fledged university that is committed to business development.

The statement said the NUC Secretary-General, Prof. Abubakar Adamu Rasheed, affirmed the honor of the university when Governor Tambuwal led the university’s governing body in handing over the university’s management documents to the commission in Abuja.

According to Professor Rasheed, “Before this visit, the NUC reviewed SSCOE’s past achievements in light of Governor Tambuwal’s commitment to education, especially tertiary education; I am pleased to present to you SSUE as the 58th university in the country and the first of its kind in Northern Nigeria, in addition to being the fourth-largest university in the country. ”

He added that the governor’s role as a citizen of the state was evident to the people of the country, stressing that he had not given up on his efforts to provide quality education to the people.

In his remarks before the presentation of the important documents, Governor Tambuwal said the establishment of the school followed the rules and regulations of the NUC.

He said the purpose of establishing the university was to cripple the staff in the education sector in the state, adding that he hoped the university would go a long way in addressing the shortage of staff and the public interest. ”

He emphasized that all necessary steps had been taken to ensure the smooth development of the university, assuring the NUC that the state government and the university would continue to uphold the rule of law.

Governor Tambuwal was accompanied by the State Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Bashir Gorau, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Malami Tambuwal, and the Managing Director of the Sokoto State Investment Commission, Alhaji Buhari Dasuki.

Other members of the University Board of Trustees who delivered speeches included: The Permanent Secretary of the Sokoto State Ministry of Education, Pharm. Mustapha Ali, SSUE Secretary, Hajiya Amina Yusuf Garba (Mni), Special Adviser to the State Governor on Technology Nafiu Basakkwace, and others.
